Long-Term Evolution: Samsung to strike Apple's iPhone 5

Samsung claims patents for LTE technology, reportedly key feature of iPhone5

Apple vs Samsung war is escalating, with reports that Samsung has now planned to strike Apple with new lawsuits if the iPhone5 comes with LTE (Long-Term Evolution) enabled, a feature most important for iPhone’s success.

According to new reports, the Korean technology giant is planning retaliatory action following a recent court verdict in the United States where it was asked to pay about $1.05billion for imitating iPhone designs.

Samsung says it holds the patents for LTE and Apple better not introduce it in the new phone that is expected to be announced on September 12.

This follows Apple’s decision to include Samsung’s new flagship smartphone the Galaxy S3 into the list of phones it wants to be banned terming it a copycat product. This takes the tally of total Samsung products in Apple’s hit list to 21.

Emirates24|7 had earlier reported that the next generation iPhone will be LTE-enabled and could work in the UAE.

LTE enables speeds up to 10 times faster when compared to the 3G speed that is used by the iPhone4S.

It was widely expected that the iPhone4S would be 4G compatible. But to everyone’s disappointment it could only handle 3G.

However, Apple introduced 4G LTE on its new iPad and it is expected to be incorporated into the new phone as well.

While the 4G LTE on the new iPad only works on 700Mhz spectrum, it is expected that the new iPhone will support 4G LTE on 1800Mhz spectrum.

For Apple though, opting out of LTE would mean sticking with a phone capable of much lower internet speed.

According to Korea Times, Samsung is preparing to counter attack Apple in 50 different patent disputes in 10 different countries.

It has also initiated talks with telecom carriers in the US and with Microsoft.

“Samsung has been in talks with major US carriers to jointly develop modified design technology. This will be effective, though we can’t unveil more details for the time being,” the report said quoting an official from the company’s telecommunications division.

Click Wall Switch Watch Flips Time on and off

For a watch to look cool and modern, it doesn’t need to be complicated. Although this watch looks like one of those complex Japanese digital watches, it’s not. You just flip its the wall switch face and it lights up to tell you what time it is.

The Click Wall Switch Watch activates when you press on its face and switch on the LED display. It’s a very simple design that makes telling the time very straightforward. The nice, retro LED display reminds me of an old calculator but it can even tell the date thanks to the third position of the switch. There are some animations as well.

You can pretend that you switch time off and on, but you can buy the watch for $99.99(USD) from ThinkGeek or Watchismo in black, blue, red or silver.

Prism Glasses Let You See Straight While Lying Down

I read in bed a lot. I also watch TV in bed a lot. In fact, there’s a lot of things I do in bed that I probably shouldn’t (like eat dinner – yes, I do that sometimes), but sometimes, I just can’t help it. It’s just too comfortable.

Of course I do all that sitting down or propped up on my back with pillows. But in case you’re the type who actually prefers to lie down while doing all these (except for eating, that is), then you’ll be pleased to hear about Prism Glasses.

They’re kooky-looking eyewear that will “bend” your vision by ninety degrees so you can actually see “straight”, even when you’re lying down. With the glasses on, you can now read your favorite magazine or catch a rerun of Friends on TV without having to sit up.

The Prism Glasses are available online from Whatever Works for $24.99 (USD).

Exogear Exovolt Plus: Unlimited Stackable Power

It’s all about power when you’re on the go. Depending on your usage, it doesn’t take long for the battery of your tablet or smartphone to run out. It’s happened to everyone, stranded with no way to juice up your gear. The Exovolt Plus stackable batteries might help you out in these situations.

Exogear’s Exovolt Plus is different from most external batteries, because you can simply stack up modules to add more battery power. The main unit, which sells for $89.95(USD), has got a 5,200 mAh battery. You can add as many subunits as you want at $49.95 a pop. Each of these also has a 5,200 mAh capacity. The batteries have double circuit protection, overheating protection, and short-circuit protection so they won’t explode in your face.

I guess these batteries would be good for camping and outdoor trips. The batteries aren’t that big, about twice the size of an iPhone, so they should be pretty easy to carry around in your pack. Exogear hasn’t yet confirmed a release date for the Exovolt Plus, but they should be coming soon.

PlayStation 2 Software Emulator Hack Available for Jailbroken PS3s

The first four models of the PS3 were backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games. For reasons unknown, but most likely not related to its customer’s best interests, Sony later removed this feature. Now, the inevitable has occurred: tinkerers have brought the feature back via a software hack.

While there have been gray market USB dongles that gave jailbroken PS3s this ability, this hack only requires software. This method supposedly works with all models of the PS3 (although it hasn’t been tested with all PS2 games), the sources below did mention that it requires users to replace some of the console’s system files.

Seems to me that this hack implies two things: a) this could very well ruin your console, and b) it would be easy for Sony to bring backwards compatibility back. It would also be nice if everyone had pet unicorns, but we don’t. So that’s that.

Toaster USB Hub and Toast Flash Drives: Ready to be Jammed with Data

I’m sure you have a thousand and one flash drives by now, but as far as gimmicks go, you don’t see USB hubs with matching flash drives that often. Too bad this toaster USB hub doesn’t pop the flash drives out when they’re ejected.

The flash drives come in four variants, including one that seems to have been burnt to a crisp already:

The toaster also has an SD Card reader built-in. You can of course use the USB hub with any flash drive (and the toast drives with any USB hub), but, well:

Unfortunately, this delicious combo costs a lot of bread. ThinkGeek is selling the goodies separately, $28 (USD) for the hub and $25 for each of the 4GB drives, so for a fully-loaded four-slice toaster, you’re looking at $128.

Paparazzo Light: The Ultimate Flash for iPhones

So you’ve gotten tired of using your iPhone’s flash. It does its job alright, but it’s nothing compared to a Nikon speedlight. That’s why the Paparazzo Light might make sense. It will make your iPhone a whole lot bulkier, but at least you’ll be able to take decent pics at night.

The Paparazzo Light is powered by a 300 Lumen LED that has two CR 123 batteries and has three different modes for brightness settings, for use in photos and vids. The examples that the team behind the flash have shown are quite compelling, so it definitely has some uses if you use your iPhone a lot. It snaps onto the base of the iPhone 4 or 4S, and can be easily removed and tossed in your bag when not in use – though it doesn’t look like it will work with most third-party cases.

The project was launched through the Kickstarter crowdfunding site. At the time of writing, it had amassed $4,500 out of a projected goal of $50,000 with 27 days to go. A pledge of at least $45(USD) will get you one of the first Paparazzo iPhone lights.

Bladepad iPhone 4S Gamepad Comes With a Case, Doesn’t Come With a Game

Despite the millions of dollars of profits that it’s raking in, Apple still hasn’t come up with a way to include native support for physical controllers in iOS games. The best that we can hope for is for a gamepad manufacturer to step up and get support from developers. I really hope Bladepad does that.

The Bladepad is a Bluetooth 4.0 gamepad that comes with all the buttons and sticks present in a modern console controller: a D-pad, two analog sticks, four face buttons, four shoulder buttons and even a select and start button. It comes with a case, but you can detach the Bladepad itself if you choose. It even comes with a charger that can simultaneously juice up the controller and the iOS device that it’s attached to.

Now for the bad news. Because it uses Bluetooth 4.0, the Bladepad is only compatible with the iPhone 4S and the new iPad. Worse, as of this writing the controller is confirmed to work with – drum roll please – only one game. The makers of the controller did say that they’re working with “several major game studios and many independent studios as well.” I really like how the Bladepad looks and fits, so I hope it gets widespread support from developers.

A pledge of at least $59 (USD) on Kickstarter gets you a Bladepad, but if you ask me I think you should pledge less than that. You might be stuck with a beautiful controller that has no games to control.

Wikipad is a Tablet for Games, not for Research

Last January Razer showed off its concept for a gaming tablet. As it turns out, there was another gaming tablet that was announced around that time. For some reason it’s called the Wikipad, and not, I don’t know, Gametab. But names aside, it does have potential.

According to VentureBeat, the Wikipad is an Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) tablet. It will have a 10.1″ 1280 x 800 IPS display, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30 1.4GHz quad-core CPU and 1GB 1066Hz DDR2 RAM. Like most tablets it will come in different memory capacities, with the cheapest model having the standard 16GB of storage.

But perhaps the most unique feature of the Wikipad is its detachable controller, which looks like a stretched out Xbox 360 controller. It has two analog sticks, a d-pad, four face buttons and a pair of triggers and bumpers. Note that Razer didn’t mention if the Project Fiona tablet’s controller is detachable. The other hyped up feature of the Wikipad is its glasses-free 3D display, but the first model that will be launched will only have a 2D display.

Wikipad wasn’t able to meet the March release date, and the VentureBeat exclusive made no mention of a price, which could mean that those numbers have changed as well. It would be stupid to assume that Apple isn’t at least considering a gamer-oriented mobile device, but for now it seems like its competitors are trying to come up with such a device. Apple still has hundreds of thousands of trump cards – the wealth of games in the App Store – but who knows what will happen if someone nails the right mix of hardware, software and network capabilities?

TidyTilt Stand: The Smart Cover for iPhones

Have you ever wanted to mount your iPhone on your fridge? Or shrink your Smart Cover to work with your iPhone? Now you can do both thanks to TidyTilt. The stand part of this accessory is interesting, but what I find the most novel are that the magnets of the cover are strong enough so that you can mount your iPhone onto any magnetically-responsive surface.

It’s a multi-purpose cover that doubles as a kickstand, earphone cord manager, and iPhone mount. It’s definitely an interesting accessory, though it will undoubtedly interfere with your favorite case.

TidyTilt was part of a successful Kickstarter campaign, and is now available in stores for iPhone 4 and 4S. It sells from TT Design Labs for $29.95(USD) in six different colors. It’s also available on Amazon and other online retailers.

Google moves into broadband with Kansas fibre

Google made its foray into the US broadband market, promising
access speeds more than 100 times faster than those of traditional cable companies.

The ultra-high speed Google Fiber service was unveiled in Kansas City, Missouri, with installations starting in September, executives said. Google hopes to roll out the service to other cities later.

"Access is the next frontier that needs to be opened," Google chief financial officer Patrick Pichette said. "We're going to do it profitably. That is our plan."

"We are at a crossroad," he added, noting that internet speeds had leveled out for broadband since around 2000. "We at Google... believe there is no need to wait."

Access is the next frontier that needs to be opened

Google said it also intends to roll out product packages for businesses, but would not provide details.

Google Fiber costs $120 a month for a package of TV, 1GBit/sec broadband and one terabyte of cloud storage. Google is also offering an internet-only package priced at $70 a month. Google is charging a $300 installation fee, saying consumers should treat it as a "home improvement" cost.

The initial service area includes central Kansas City, Missouri and all of the city of neighboring Kansas City, Kansas.

Features and freebie

Google Fiber includes such features as the ability to record eight TV shows at a time and store up to 500 hours of high definition programming. Users can choose to use a tablet or smartphone as a voice-activated remote control.

Google is offering its Nexus 7 tablet with the Google TV app to early users of the service.

Google said it is setting up a six-week "rally" for consumers to vote on where the first fiber communities, or "fiberhoods," should be installed in the Kansas City area.

Consumers must pay $10 to register their household online for service. About 50 "neighbours" will need to register in order for their area to be eligible for installation services, according to Google executives.

Whether or not consumers will embrace the new offerings remains to be seen. But officials said they are confident Kansas City will be a showcase of success for a larger rollout.

"Google is a very different company," said Kevin Lo, general manager of Google Access. "And this is not a short-term project."

TinkerBrick Case Combines iPods with LEGO

As you know, we love LEGO bricks around here. There’s something just so amazing about the billions of different creative things you can do with these little modular components. Now, you can combine your LEGO enthusiasm with your iPod Touch with a single gadget – the TinkerBrick case.

The TinkerBrick is a special LEGO-compatible iPod Touch case, which allows you to integrate your iOS device into your LEGO creations. This isn’t like some of the other LEGO cases I’ve seen which just let you snap a couple of bricks on your phone. This case is specifically made so you can use your iOS gadget as a component of your LEGO builds. For instance, let’s say you want to make a strummable LEGO guitar, where the iPod Touch acts as the frets. Perfect. Simply build your LEGO guitar, snap your iPod Touch into the TinkerBrick, and then attach it to the fretboard. Voila!

The sky is really the limit. With the TinkerBrick case, you can use your iPod Touch as a screen and input device within LEGO builds, so you can create interactive creatures and gadgets with LEGO accessories.

The TinkerBrick case is available in red, black, white and yellow versions, but at this point, the TinkerBrick case is available only for the iPod Touch (4th Gen.) I’m hopeful that they’ll release the case for other devices like the iPhone and iPad, as I could see plenty of possibilities for integrating those devices into LEGO builds as well. You can get your hands on a TinkerBrick case over on Amazon now for $32.95(USD).

With a small wall-plug design, you simply plug the unit directly into a power outlet and press the Push n Connect (WPS) button, and it starts to do its job. The WN1000RP repeats 2.4GHz WiFi signal from your wireless router or gateway to improve WiFi coverage and signal, eliminating WiFi dead zones. Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.D review

Hitachi has been swallowed up by Western Digital, but part of the agreement means it’ll have to remain an independent firm for at least two years. That means some healthy competition in the hard disk market and, crucially, that drives like the Deskstar 7K1000.D will keep appearing on the market.

Our 1TB sample has a SATA 6Gbit/sec connection, runs at 7,200rpm, and includes 32MB of cache – half the amount used by the majority of high-end hard disks.

That didn’t seem to matter in our tests, though. A large file write speed of 333.2MB/sec is the best we’ve seen from any hard disk, with the Samsung Spinpoint F3 scoring a result of 302.5MB/sec. A large file read speed of 161.6MB/sec is excellent – only one other drive, Seagate’s Barracuda XT, has run through that benchmark faster.

In our small file tests, the Hitachi’s write score of 158.4MB/sec was middling – the Samsung’s 165.2MB/sec score is the best we’ve seen - but a read pace of 30.6MB/sec was faster than every other drive we’ve tested.

Our final benchmark, the third-party AS SSD tool, also saw the Hitachi return good results. The Hitachi’s 186.6MB/sec sequential write speed is the best we’ve seen, outpacing the Samsung by more than 40MB/sec. Its 187.6MB/sec score in the sequential read benchmark is, again, the quickest we’ve recorded.

You might expect to pay a little more to net this kind of performance, but fortunately that’s not the case: for 1TB of super-fast hard disk storage you’ll have to cough up £65, which works out at 6.9p per gigabyte. That’s comparable with the Samsung, which costs £62.

In short, the Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.D is a superb all-rounder. Let’s just hope that, once that two year period is up, Western Digital lets Hitachi keep making drives like this.
