Acer CloudMobile Smartphone Up for Pre-order

Acer’s CloudMobile Android smartphone is now available for pre-order at Expansys for GBP284.99 (US$448). As its name tells, the phone will include some features. It is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor with 1GB of RAM and runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The 4.3-inch touchscreen uses IPS panel and has 1280×720 HD resolution.

The CloudMobile comes with support for AcerCloudm an integrated cloud solution that is pretty close to iCloud. The service will sync documents, images, media files on your phone with you PC.

MetroPCS LG Connect 4G Smartphones capable of VoLTE

MetroPCS announced the world’s first commercial launch of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services and releases the world’s first VoLTE-capable phone, the LG Connect 4G (model MS840). Currently, 4G LTE phones handle voice calls using 2G or 3G network, with VoLTE service and handsets, calls to and from the handset will use LTE network, regardless of the handset or network used on the other end of the call.

The LG Connect 4G is powered by a 1.2GHz processor with 1GB of RAM. Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 with Windows 8

Lenovo announced the ThinkPad Tablet 2, its first tablet specially designed for Windows 8. Replacing the original ThinkPad Tablet with Android, the new 10-inch device is powered by Intel’s latest Atom mobile platform and runs Windows 8 Pro. The tablet is able to run desktop and Windows apps and fully support Microsoft Office for viewing, editing and creating Word, Excel and Powerpoint files.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 comes with a 10.1-inch 1366×768 IPS multiotuch touchscreen display with optional digitizer ad pen, which is good for note taking, signature and completing forms. It features a 8 Megapixel main camera and a 2 Megapixel front camera for video conferencing, noise-cancelling microphone and three full-size USB ports for connecting existing USB devices such as printers, USB drives. The tablet also has HDMI output that allows users to do their work on a bigger screen. Other than WiFi and Ethernet connectivity, the ThinkPad tablet will also be available with 3G and 4G options.

Lenovo is planning to release the ThinkPad Tablet 2 when Windows 8 is launched in October.

Pioneer XDJ-AERO WiFi-enabled DJ Controller

Pioneer introduces the world’s first WiFi-enabled DJ system, the XDJ-AERO that can wirelessly play music tracks from smartphones, tablets or notebook computers. Other than mixing and arranging music tracks stored on smart devices via WiFi 802.11b/g/n, the DJ controller can also load tracks from USB storage devices. Even if WiFi network is not available, it can create its own wireless access point for connect with WiFi-enabled devices. Four WiFi music sources can be connected with the AERO.

The XDJ-AERO is equipped with 24-bit AD/DA converter and offers two RCA inputs and a 3.5-inch MIC in, and two Master Out (one 3.5mm jack and one RCA) and two headphones outputs. The controller features Beat Sync and Auto Mix. The former will synchronizes the music loaded in each player on beat with matching beats per minute (BPM) with a press of the Sync button, while the Auto Mix mode will link playlist created on a smartphone/tablet, computer or USB storage device with cross-fade or fade-in/out effects. PlayStation 2 Software Emulator Hack Available for Jailbroken PS3s

The first four models of the PS3 were backwards compatible with PlayStation 2 games. For reasons unknown, but most likely not related to its customer’s best interests, Sony later removed this feature. Now, the inevitable has occurred: tinkerers have brought the feature back via a software hack.

While there have been gray market USB dongles that gave jailbroken PS3s this ability, this hack only requires software. This method supposedly works with all models of the PS3 (although it hasn’t been tested with all PS2 games), the sources below did mention that it requires users to replace some of the console’s system files.

Seems to me that this hack implies two things: a) this could very well ruin your console, and b) it would be easy for Sony to bring backwards compatibility back. It would also be nice if everyone had pet unicorns, but we don’t. So that’s that.

Toaster USB Hub and Toast Flash Drives: Ready to be Jammed with Data

I’m sure you have a thousand and one flash drives by now, but as far as gimmicks go, you don’t see USB hubs with matching flash drives that often. Too bad this toaster USB hub doesn’t pop the flash drives out when they’re ejected.

MetroPCS Samsung Galaxy S Lightray 4G Smartphone with Dyle Mobile TV

MetroPCS and Samsung bring a new Galaxy smartphone, the Galaxy S Lightray 4G which is the first smartphone in the US to offer live broadcast television with Dyle mobile TV. Powered by a 1GHz processor, the Lightray runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. With Dyle mobile TV, users can watch local and national sports, news and entertainment broadcast programming on their mobile phones.

If mobile TV is not attrative enough, the Galaxy S Lightray also supports 4G LTE high-speed data network. It features LTE Mobile Hotspot function for sharing 4G connection with multiple WiFi devices. The handset sports a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Plus 800×480 touchscreen display, a 8 Megapixel main camera with LED flash, a 1.3 Megapixel front-facing camera for video chat, as well as GPS, Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity. It has a mini HDMI output.

MetroPCS’s Lightray 4G comes with 1.37GB internal memory and supports microSD/SDHC up to 32GB. It is available for $549. According to the carrier, access to Dyle mobile TV service is available to customers on a MetroPCS 4G LTE service plan at no additional charge.

Paparazzo Light: The Ultimate Flash for iPhones

So you’ve gotten tired of using your iPhone’s flash. It does its job alright, but it’s nothing compared to a Nikon speedlight. That’s why the Paparazzo Light might make sense. It will make your iPhone a whole lot bulkier, but at least you’ll be able to take decent pics at night.

The Paparazzo Light is powered by a 300 Lumen LED that has two CR 123 batteries and has three different modes for brightness settings, for use in photos and vids. The examples that the team behind the flash have shown are quite compelling, so it definitely has some uses if you use your iPhone a lot. It snaps onto the base of the iPhone 4 or 4S, and can be easily removed and tossed in your bag when not in use – though it doesn’t look like it will work with most third-party cases.

The project was launched through the Kickstarter crowdfunding site. At the time of writing, it had amassed $4,500 out of a projected goal of $50,000 with 27 days to go. A pledge of at least $45(USD) will get you one of the first Paparazzo iPhone lights.

Bladepad iPhone 4S Gamepad Comes With a Case, Doesn’t Come With a Game

Despite the millions of dollars of profits that it’s raking in, Apple still hasn’t come up with a way to include native support for physical controllers in iOS games. The best that we can hope for is for a gamepad manufacturer to step up and get support from developers. I really hope Bladepad does that.

The Bladepad is a Bluetooth 4.0 gamepad that comes with all the buttons and sticks present in a modern console controller: a D-pad, two analog sticks, four face buttons, four shoulder buttons and even a select and start button. It comes with a case, but you can detach the Bladepad itself if you choose. It even comes with a charger that can simultaneously juice up the controller and the iOS device that it’s attached to.

Now for the bad news. Because it uses Bluetooth 4.0, the Bladepad is only compatible with the iPhone 4S and the new iPad. Worse, as of this writing the controller is confirmed to work with – drum roll please – only one game. The makers of the controller did say that they’re working with “several major game studios and many independent studios as well.” I really like how the Bladepad looks and fits, so I hope it gets widespread support from developers.

A pledge of at least $59 (USD) on Kickstarter gets you a Bladepad, but if you ask me I think you should pledge less than that. You might be stuck with a beautiful controller that has no games to control.

Wikipad is a Tablet for Games, not for Research

Last January Razer showed off its concept for a gaming tablet. As it turns out, there was another gaming tablet that was announced around that time. For some reason it’s called the Wikipad, and not, I don’t know, Gametab. But names aside, it does have potential.

According to VentureBeat, the Wikipad is an Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) tablet. It will have a 10.1″ 1280 x 800 IPS display, an NVIDIA Tegra 3 T30 1.4GHz quad-core CPU and 1GB 1066Hz DDR2 RAM. Like most tablets it will come in different memory capacities, with the cheapest model having the standard 16GB of storage.

But perhaps the most unique feature of the Wikipad is its detachable controller, which looks like a stretched out Xbox 360 controller. It has two analog sticks, a d-pad, four face buttons and a pair of triggers and bumpers. Note that Razer didn’t mention if the Project Fiona tablet’s controller is detachable. The other hyped up feature of the Wikipad is its glasses-free 3D display, but the first model that will be launched will only have a 2D display.

Wikipad wasn’t able to meet the March release date, and the VentureBeat exclusive made no mention of a price, which could mean that those numbers have changed as well. It would be stupid to assume that Apple isn’t at least considering a gamer-oriented mobile device, but for now it seems like its competitors are trying to come up with such a device. Apple still has hundreds of thousands of trump cards – the wealth of games in the App Store – but who knows what will happen if someone nails the right mix of hardware, software and network capabilities?
